No stopping for this circus performer at 96!

Las Vegas, Feb 08: Konrad Thurano, who was born almost a century ago in 1909, has entertained audiences around the world. He spent several years performing in South Africa, the Middle East and America. He worked in Las Vegas with the legendary Sammy Davis Jr., met Charlie Rivel and Charlie Chaplin, and performed with Bing Crosby.

At the age of 96, most people would be, well, taking it easy. Definitely not doing pull-ups on the high wire on one finger!

Konrad Thurano is the world's oldest circus performer – his mementoes show an adventurous career. The circus is his life, he says - he's spent much of his life doing a double act with his son.

Konrad Thurano said, “If you want to do something, do it with love and passion or dont do it at all. If you are forced to do something, there is no love behind it. What if you do even just a small something with love and passion, it will be well received."

Even after he retires in a few weeks' time, he wants to return as a freelance.

As they say, it's in the blood.

Secret Traffic Ticket Trick - to Keep From Getting Points on Your License

Now, I dont know if this works or not. It was sent in by one of our readers and I think it is an interesting idea. Now I am not suggesting you try this...this article is for information only.

According to our reader; "If you get a traffic ticket and you are going to get points on your license, then there is a secret little trick to ensure that you DO NOT get any points.

Here's how it works. When you get your fine, send in a check to pay for it. Now, if for example, the fine is say, $90.00, then make the check out for $94.00 or $93.50 or some small amount over the actual fine.

The city or county or state that gave you the ticket will then have to send you back a check for the difference. Now here is the trick! DO NOT CASH THE REFUND CHECK!! Throw it away!! Points are not assessed against your license until after all financial transactions are complete.

If you do not cash the check, then the transactions are NOT complete.

However, the city or county or state has received its money and they are happy and will not bother you anymore."

Elderly give hotel new lease of life

Swiss hotels are disappearing in unprecedented numbers, but one has been given a reprieve by offering beds to guests living out their final years.

The hotel near Interlaken has discovered a new, growing market: elderly people in need of care. It could be a solution for some of the other hundreds of hotels expected to slip into extinction over the next few years.

"It's almost like living in a hotel! I especially like the view," said Karl Schweingruber, an 83-year-old resident of the Schlössli nursing home. (read more)

Aging Ears Get Bionic Boost

Cochlear devices could be used to ease or reverse seniors' hearing loss.

WASHINGTON -- Cochlear implants may not be just for the profoundly deaf anymore: Iowa scientists are developing the next generation, a "hybrid implant" to combine the best of bionics with regular hearing aids for age-related hearing loss.

If it works -- and early study results are promising -- it one day may help thousands of older Americans.

The key difference: Unlike regular cochlear implants, the hybrid model would let people keep their natural music appreciation even as it helps them hear speech more clearly again. (read more)

TV may be tied to poorer mental scores in older people

New York - Older women who say talk shows and soap operas are their favourite TV programmes tend to score more poorly on tests of memory, attention and other cognitive skills, researchers reported on Monday.

That doesn't mean that daytime television is a brain drain, they say, since it's not clear that there's a direct relationship between the two.

But the findings do point to some association between TV choices and intellectual function, and that could prove useful in evaluating older people for cognitive decline, according lead investigator Dr Joshua Fogel of Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. (read more)

Large doses of folate might help keep high blood pressure under control

And now researchers are finding evidence that, taken in large quantities, it can prevent high blood pressure too.
